At around 7:40 a.m., Alyssa Castro and her boyfriend were driving through their neighborhood in southern Wichita when a neighbor flagged them down.
Approaching their vehicle, the neighbor revealed hands stained with what looked like blood. She requested to borrow a phone to contact 911 and quickly retreated into a nearby house, taking the phone with her.
The emergency dispatcher received a report of a potential stabbing, notifying first responders that a woman had claimed a stabbing incident occurred in her residence.
Further details from the caller indicated that the stabbing was an act of self-defense, as she was attempting to protect herself from her mother.
Wichita police arrived at the scene by 7:52 a.m., discovering a woman outside the residence with cuts on her hands and blood on her clothes.
Inside the home, they found 81-year-old Anita Avers unresponsive in her bed, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Both women were subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment.
