In a tragic turn of events, a man from New Jersey has confessed to the brutal murder of his parents, a crime that stemmed from a dispute over household chores. Michael Mulgrew, aged 37, admitted in court to having fatally stabbed his parents, Eugene and Cheryl Mulgrew, aged 71 and 69 respectively, before moving their bodies to a bedroom. This shocking confession was made public by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

The legal proceedings took a significant step forward as Mulgrew pleaded guilty to two counts of murder. In light of the severity of the crime, prosecutors are advocating for two consecutive 30-year sentences, ensuring that he serves his term without the possibility of parole. The sentencing is slated for this summer, marking a grim milestone in this harrowing case.

The chain of events leading to this tragedy began on the evening of November 1, 2023. According to an affidavit cited by NJ.com, Cheryl Mulgrew reached out to law enforcement and mental health services, seeking intervention for her son. Despite her efforts, by the time authorities arrived at their home on Lincoln Avenue in Barnegat Township, Michael had already left the premises.

The situation escalated when Cheryl contacted the police once more, informing them that her son had returned home and that they intended to seek medical advice the following morning. Unfortunately, these plans never materialized.

On the morning of November 2, 2023, around 11 a.m., officers from the Barnegat Township Police Department were dispatched to the residence on Lincoln Avenue. They were called to assist medical personnel, but as they neared the home, they noticed a man walking away, a sight that would later be linked to the tragic events that had unfolded inside.

On Nov. 2, 2023, at about 11 a.m., officers with the Barnegat Township Police Department “were summoned” to a home on Lincoln Avenue to help medical personnel. As they approached, the officers spotted a man “walking away.”

They continued toward the residence and saw “red staining – which appeared to be blood – on the front door.” The officers entered, finding blood throughout the home, and as they entered a bedroom, they found “two victims with apparent stab wounds to their upper torsos” as well as a knife.

The victims were identified as Cheryl and Eugene Mulgrew.

Officers determined that the man walking away from the house was Michael Mulgrew, and they found him and took him into custody. He reportedly had a lot to say when investigators interviewed him.

The now-convicted defendant said he left his parents’ house the night before because he believed his family would hurt him, NJ.com reported. He then admitted to attacking his parents the next day with a kitchen knife during an argument about household chores before dragging their bodies into a bedroom, packing a bag, and leaving the house.

Michael Mulgrew will be sentenced on June 5.

Cheryl and Eugene Mulgrew were “childhood sweethearts” and married for nearly 50 years, their obituary states. “They were not only life partners but best friends and loving parents,” it states, adding, “Together, they created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and love.”
