COLORADO SPRINGS — The El Paso County Sheriff’s Department has closed off Excursion Drive near French Elementary due to a barricaded suspect inside a home.

Residents are advised to stay away from doors and windows, and if you’re not in the area, to stay away. The area is a neighborhood just to the west of the intersection of Powers Blvd and Grinnell Blvd.

Nearby Widefield District 3’s French Elementary is on a precautionary lockout status due to the incident. Parents are asked not to come to the school to pick up students at this time. Information on how the situation will be handled if the incident lasts until the end of the school day have not been released.

According to Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Jason Garret, the suspect is an adult male wanted as part of an investigation and on a domestic violence warrant. The suspect is believed to be heavily armed inside the home.

The suspect is alone in the home, according to Sgt. Garrett. Deputies are using phone, text and loudspeakers while trying to communicate with the suspect.

News5 has a crew at the scene working to gather more information.
