Arrest made, man left in serious condition after 'random' Sydney stabbing attack

A man has been apprehended following a seemingly unprovoked stabbing incident on a bus in Sydney’s Inner West, which left another individual seriously injured and hospitalized.

Emergency responders were dispatched to Addison Road, close to the well-known Vic on the Park pub in Marrickville, around 1am.

Upon arrival, authorities discovered that a 51-year-old male passenger had suffered stab wounds to his arm, hand, and face inflicted by another commuter.

The police are currently investigating to determine the motive behind this unexpected assault.

Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald addressed the media, stating, “Such a random attack is distressing, especially since both individuals were strangers to each other.”

“Being a witness or victim in such a situation on that bus would have been truly frightening,” she added.

The attacker then exited the bus and had fled the scene by the time police had arrived.

Police have now confirmed they have arrested a 54-year-old man.

He was taken to Newtown Police Station, where he is being questioned by police.

No charges have been laid.

The victim was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

Police have established a crime scene and have commenced investigations.

Despite the random and violent nature of the attack, Fitzgerald reassured the community they could feel safe to travel on Sydney’s public transport network, highlighting how quickly the alleged attacker was apprehended.

“It was a random attack, but we are confident the person involved is now at Newtown Police station, and [assure] members of the public to feel safe on our transport network,” she said.

“It’s generally well policed.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Inner West police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
