A team working on a documentary about Madeleine McCann said they have recovered evidence showing a key suspect was in the area when the British toddler vanished in Portugal in 2007.

According to The Sun, journalists, and ex-investigators with German TV station Sat.1 said they have proof Christian Brueckner, 44, was in Praia da Luz at the time of McCann’s disappearance. McCann was three when she vanished from her bedroom while vacationing at the Portuguese resort with her parents and family friends.

Sat.1 said they have recovered “many new clues and indications” that Brueckner was responsible for the apparent abduction. Editor-in-chief Juliane Ebling said they have gathered evidence in Germany, Portugal, and England which implicates him, The Sun reported.

Brueckner has not been charged in connection with McCann’s unsolved disappearance, despite German prosecutors naming him a suspect in 2020. He is currently serving a seven-year sentence for raping an elderly American woman in Portugal in 2005.

However, a source told The Sun that Brueckner has several people who will provide an alibi. One of them is reportedly a woman who told police that she was with Brueckner at the time McCann vanished and they were miles away.

The woman reportedly also said they were stopped by police officers who found nothing suspicious.

The Sun reported that Portuguese officials still do not believe Brueckner had any involvement in McCann’s disappearance.

Speaking with the news outlet, the source said, “They [multiple witnesses] simply don’t want to see the wrong person convicted and for Maddie’s true abductor to remain at large. That’s why they will speak up.”
