An Alabama teacher was arrested on Wednesday for giving a 4-year-old girl alcohol last month.

A student at Collins-Rhodes Elementary School claimed that her special education teacher, Tracy Walker, had given her an alcoholic beverage around nap time on April 28. When her parents picked her up, the girl looked extremely unwell, prompting them to take her to the hospital, as reported by WALA.

“This child is usually one of the first to wake up—she’s cheerful and ready to start her day. When the aide noticed that something was off, she approached to wake her. The child eventually woke up but was very sluggish,” said Lonnie Parsons, a deputy from Mobile County.

The girl reportedly stayed in the intensive care unit for two days. A toxicology test showed that her blood alcohol level was nearly 0.29, which is more than three times the legal limit for adults.

Despite Walker’s arrest, Mobile County police are still trying to figure out why Walker gave the girl the drink.

“During the course of our investigation, we were told complaints were made about this particular teacher,” Parsons told WPMI. “We have other questions as to A: How did it get into the school, B: What other children may be involved.”

Walker was charged with aggravated child abuse. She is due in court on Friday.
