A 15-year-old boy is facing charges after allegedly colliding with a police officer using an E-bike in Melbourne’s central business district, resulting in severe injuries to a senior sergeant.
The incident unfolded around 4 p.m. yesterday when the male sergeant was on patrol in the bustling Flinders Street area. He observed a group of youths maneuvering E-bikes recklessly through the crowded streets.
As the officer attempted to intercept the group near the intersection of Swanston and Elizabeth streets, he instructed one of the riders to stop.
According to police reports, the teenager accelerated and struck the sergeant while trying to flee the scene.
The sergeant sustained serious leg injuries and was promptly transported to the hospital for treatment.
While the rest of the group managed to escape, the 15-year-old from Port Phillip was apprehended at the scene by other officers.
The teenager spent the night in custody and has since been hit with a string of serious charges.
The teenager has been granted bail and is scheduled to face a children’s court at a later date. Police are continuing their search for the remaining riders involved in the group.
