In Texas, a 17-year-old girl is charged with causing the death of her 8-year-old brother by allegedly torturing him over several days, according to authorities.

Kara Walker is facing a charge of serious bodily injury to a child, as shared by Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez on X (formerly Twitter). She was taken into custody on Wednesday, more than half a year after her brother’s death. Her boyfriend, 18-year-old Nolan Stallings, had been previously detained on the same charge.

According to a motion for adequate bail, “The victim was subjected to abuse and torture for days,” which resulted in injuries that led to his death.

The alleged abuse reportedly took place on February 10th at a residence on the 100 block of Greendell Street in Highlands, near Houston, where Stallings resided with his family, stated Gonzalez. Walker is accused of using a blunt object to beat the boy, while Stallings, recently indicted, allegedly assaulted him with both blunt and unidentified objects, in addition to using his hand.

Authorities responded to a local hospital after the boy arrived with serious injuries that appeared to be from abuse. He died a few days later.

Stallings was arrested a few weeks later, on March 4.

Authorities told local CBS affiliate KHOU that Stallings claimed the boy, whose identity has not been disclosed, frequently “fell down.” However, police determined the injuries aligned with abuse.

Stallings is held in the Harris County Jail with bail set at $1 million, while Walker’s bond is $100,000. Walker’s next court hearing is set for Tuesday. Stallings requested a lower bond, stating the incident happened nine days before he turned 18 and that he was still in high school, but the judge denied the request.

Deputies have not divulged a motive for the alleged torture, nor have they expanded on how they believe the abuse occurred.
