A teenage boy is accused of trying to kill a 6-year-old girl by pushing her into a fire, leaving deputies in Baldwin County, Alabama, mystified.
“It is unclear what led to this unfortunate incident, and our investigators are actively following leads to determine exactly what occurred,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a post late Sunday.
Investigators did not name the people involved.
They said that deputies responded at 4:30 p.m. that day to a home on Claremont Drive in the unincorporated area of Foley to investigate a domestic incident.
“This incident was called in by a third party, who alleged that a young child had been burned by a fire at the location,” they wrote.
Deputies arrived to find a 6-year-old girl and her mother across the street at a neighbor’s home.
“Both were suffering from significant burns and were taken to a hospital for treatment,” authorities wrote. “They are in stable condition currently.”
Investigators claim a 17-year-old boy who lived at the incident location pushed the girl into a fire on purpose. The mother got hurt rescuing her from the flames.

Deputies did not suggest a motive.
As for the teenager, he is charged with attempted murder and assault in the second degree.
“This investigation is in its early stages and is ongoing,” they wrote. “The suspect in this case is in custody, and there are no other threats in that area.”
