A 19-year-old from Texas faces allegations of attacking someone with a sword during a dispute, severing the victim’s hand and injuring his face, later blaming the incident on a “dog,” according to police reports.
“I cut his motherf—ing hand off,” admitted Deroyce Brown, hailing from Texarkana, in a police interview following the July 23 incident, as detailed in the probable cause affidavit obtained by local news outlet TXK Today.
Brown faces charges of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly attacking a man in a residence on the 500 block of Lumpkin Street, as per court documents. The Texarkana Police Department submitted Brown’s affidavit to Bowie County on Wednesday, after detaining him on the morning of the alleged crime. He is now held on a $500,000 bail.
“Was screaming like a b—,” Brown recounted about the victim after he plunged the sword into the man’s face and eye, authorities report.
A witness present in the house reported to police that he overheard Brown and the victim arguing, woke up, and found “blood on the floors,” according to the affidavit. Brown reportedly fled but was tracked to a nearby Waterman Street address, with officers following a trail of blood from the scene to his location, as investigators reported.
During his police interview, Brown was asked to recall the alleged events.
Brown allegedly recounted the encounter, saying, “What else you think happened?” and described slashing the man’s face and stabbing his eye and shoulder. The altercation occurred after the two had been drinking and reportedly argued over an item Brown believed was taken from him, as reported by police and TXK Today.
Brown allegedly tried claiming that a “dog” attacked the victim, along with stating that he acted in self-defense. Authorities were unable to find any animals inside of the home or evidence of an attack on Brown.
After speaking to cops, Brown was allegedly spotted on surveillance cameras acting erratically in the interview room. “[Brown] began to laugh out loud and said he didn’t want to talk and confirmed he wanted a lawyer,” the affidavit says, noting how he laid on the floor at one point and verbally recounted how the victim was “screaming.”
Brown is facing up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
