Inset: Duwan Morgan (GoFundMe). Background: St. Louis County police investigate a shooting that left the 14-year-old dead (KDSK).
A 14-year-old boy from Missouri was fatally shot by a stray bullet while playing video games in his bedroom at home in St. Louis, as reported by authorities.
Just after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, the St. Louis County Police Department responded to a 911 call regarding a shooting in the 10200 block of Hobkirk Drive. When the officers arrived, they discovered a 14-year-old boy, later identified as Duwan Morgan, deceased from at least one gunshot wound.
“A meaningless shootout resulted in a stray bullet penetrating my home and hitting my cherished son Duwan Morgan, who was just 14,” wrote his mother, Keshia Morgan, in a GoFundMe description. “Duwan was an energetic and compassionate young boy with a promising future. Our lives are now burdened with an indescribable emptiness.”
No arrests have been made in the case.
Duwan’s aunt, Erica Davis, shared with the local NBC affiliate KDSK that two groups of teenagers were involved in an altercation when at least one individual drew a gun and fired. A bullet managed to enter Duwan’s bedroom, hitting and killing him while he engaged in video games.
“He was minding his business, doing nothing,” she told the TV station. “Just sitting in his room. And now he’s gone.”
The boy’s mom and two brothers were inside the home but were not hit.
Davis recalled how her nephew was excited to be entering high school.
“He was a beautiful, nice kid,” Davis said.
Duwan’s family wants justice and is urging people who know what happened to come forward.
“My family will never be the same,” Davis told KDSK. “He didn’t deserve to lose his life like this.”
