Uber driver arrested after allegedly shooting teen

A backdrop of news footage captures the Waffle House in Dunwoody, Georgia, the location where the purported shooting happened on October 5 (WANF). Inset shows Meredith Grundy as per the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

A Georgia Uber driver allegedly shot a teenage girl following an altercation at a Waffle House, which started due to his refusal to accommodate all her friends in his vehicle.

Meredith Grundy, 38 years old, secured his bond following his arrest by Dunwoody Police Department officers early on Sunday. Based on police reports, Grundy, while working for Uber, was called to a Waffle House in Dunwoody. Upon arrival, he encountered five teenage girls who were waiting for a ride. He informed them that his car could not safely accommodate all of them due to limited seat space and seatbelts.

Police indicated that a dispute erupted and eventually intensified when one of the teens allegedly “threatened to kill” Grundy and “struck him in the face.” In response, Grundy is accused of retrieving a firearm and shooting the girl multiple times.

The Dunwoody police released a statement noting that the remaining four girls claimed there were no threats before Grundy allegedly fired his weapon. The 16-year-old girl who was allegedly shot by Grundy was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, with injuries to her back and legs. According to WANF, a local news outlet, the girl was in critical but stable condition as of Tuesday.

Grundy faced charges of aggravated assault and firearm possession. He posted bond, though details of the bond date were not specified. Law&Crime reached out to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office for further information but did not get an immediate response.

In response to the allegations against Grundy, Uber confirmed his link to the company and provided a statement to WANF, which said, “The reported details of this incident are horrifying. We removed the driver’s access to the platform and stand ready to support law enforcement with their investigation.”
