Teen claims he shot ex's pal after they egged his home, pointed a 'green laser' at his body but video tells a different story, cops say

An innocent prank escalated dangerously in Florida when a young man fired shots at his ex-girlfriend and her companion, claiming they directed a “green laser” at him during their escapade.

Jason Rodriguez (Miami-Dade Corrections).

The incident unfolded when police in Hialeah were alerted to a hospital visit at around 2 a.m., where a woman had arrived with a gunshot wound to her arm. She recounted that she and a friend had gone to egg her ex-boyfriend’s home. As they attempted to leave, the ex, identified as 18-year-old Jason Alejandro Rodriguez, allegedly fired shots at their vehicle, injuring her.

Authorities proceeded to Rodriguez’s residence, where he was interviewed after being read his Miranda rights. He confessed to firing at the car, explaining that he had been disturbed by noise outside, and upon investigating with his firearm, he claimed to have been struck by an egg and a rock. As the vehicle sped away, Rodriguez alleged he saw a “green laser” aimed at him, prompting his response.

However, the narrative took a turn when detectives reviewed surveillance footage, which contradicted Rodriguez’s statements. The video evidence revealed that Rodriguez had not been hit by any projectiles, nor was there any sign of a “green laser” targeting him. Moreover, it captured him using his phone’s flashlight to retrieve shell casings, further undermining his account of events.

That’s when he allegedly opened fire at the car, hitting his ex’s friend.

Detectives obtained video that showed the entire incident — and it proved Rodriguez’s version of events didn’t hold up, cops say. The video showed Rodriguez was never hit by a rock or egg, nor was there any “green laser,” per the affidavit. It also revealed he used his phone flashlight to find the shell casings and pick them up, cops said.

“Based on the investigation conducted, the defendant provided an inaccurate statement to police where he attempted to justify the shooting; where the video clearly depicts he shot at the vehicle as it sped off and did not pose a threat to him and/or anyone,” detectives concluded.

Rodriguez faces charges of attempted murder and shooting into a vehicle. He is being held at the Miami-Dade County Jail without bond.
