At just 23 years old, Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska leaves her homeland to begin anew in the United States with her family. Passionate about animals and art, Iryna aspires to work as a veterinary assistant.
Her supportive family stands by her side as she adjusts to American life, learning English and securing employment at a pizza restaurant. However, one fateful Friday night after work, Iryna’s life takes a devastating turn, a situation that some lawmakers argue could have been prevented.
Following her shift, Iryna boards the Charlotte, North Carolina, Transit System, unwittingly sitting in front of Decarlos Brown Jr., a man with a history of violence.
Suddenly, Decarlos Brown produces a pocketknife, stands, and lunges over the seat, stabbing Iryna in the neck. As he departs, leaving a trail of blood from the knife on the train floor, Iryna desperately clings to life, pressing her neck but unable to summon assistance.
Fellow passengers merely watch, some capturing the horrific scene while others flee, offering no aid to the dying Iryna. Meanwhile, Decarlos Brown paces the train, changes his shirt, and exits calmly at the next station.
The tragic incident has ignited national ire after the release of the attack’s video, highlighting that the suspect, known for previous violent offenses, should have been incarcerated. The public now questions how a repeat offender was allowed to remain free.
Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, was charged with committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system and is being held without bond.
