In a tragic case that has haunted Texas for over seven years, a mother has admitted her role in the death of her young daughter. On Monday, Sarah Elizabeth Newsom pled guilty to charges linked to the heartbreaking demise of her 2-year-old, Scarlette Oliva Newsom, which occurred in October 2018.
Newsom’s plea involved a charge of injury to a child by failing to protect, a serious offense under the circumstances. According to a report by KFDX, she received a 22-year prison sentence. Originally, she had faced a more severe charge of causing serious bodily injury to a child.
Her then-boyfriend, Joshua Fulbright, was found guilty earlier this year of capital murder and received a life sentence. This conviction came after Fulbright reportedly confessed to striking Scarlette on the head, an incident that occurred while Newsom was present in the room, as previously detailed by CrimeOnline.
The situation worsened when the young girl was brought to a hospital the following day, suffering from seizures and vomiting. In a desperate and misguided attempt to stop the seizures, Newsom allegedly struck her daughter multiple times.
As part of her plea agreement, Newsom has given up her right to challenge the verdict. Meanwhile, Fulbright has initiated an appeal against his own conviction, according to KFDX.
KFDX said that Newsom waived her right to appeal as part of her plea deal. Fulbright, who was convicted at trial, has appealed his conviction.
