Authorities have apprehended a man in connection with the abduction and sexual assault of a woman whose lifeless body was discovered on a Florida beach last week.

Brandon McCray, aged 28, was taken into custody in Hollywood on December 30, just four days following the grim discovery of Heather Asendorf’s body concealed beneath a tarp on a nearby beach. According to Us Weekly, McCray quickly emerged as a key suspect due to his acquaintance with Asendorf, who was 56.

Details regarding the specific nature of the relationship between McCray and Asendorf remain undisclosed.

A friend of Asendorf shared with the Sun Sentinel that she had been staying at a hotel merely a block away from where her body was eventually found. The friend also recounted last seeing Asendorf on December 24, when she was enjoying herself by dancing at the Hollywood Beach Bandshell.

“She was a truly kind-hearted person. Everyone really appreciated her presence. She had a style of dance all her own,” he commented.

Reports indicate that Asendorf hailed from Pennsylvania, but she had traveled to Hollywood for several weeks to reconnect with friends in the area.

A week before Asendorf’s body was discovered, McCray was arrested on an outstanding warrant for disorderly intoxication and resisting an officer in 2023. He bonded out of jail the next day, according to the Sun Sentinel.

McCray is charged with sexual assault on a victim over 12 years in age, kidnapping, battery by strangulation, and simple battery. His bond was set at $770,000.
