New developments have surfaced in the case of a 21-year-old University of Kentucky student and cheerleader, who faces allegations of concealing her newborn in a closet within her campus apartment.
The legal proceedings involving Laken Snelling are advancing to a grand jury, set to review the evidence towards the end of January. This jury will likely consider indicting Snelling on the three charges to which she initially pleaded not guilty, with potential additional charges of murder or manslaughter, contingent upon the results of the newborn’s autopsy.
Snelling was taken into custody after authorities discovered her infant deceased in a trash bag located in her closet. The autopsy has not clarified the cause of death, adding complexity to the situation. Prior to the discovery, Snelling had shared photos showcasing her pregnancy.
Investigators claim that Snelling secretly delivered her baby, subsequently wrapping the infant in a towel, sealing him in a trash bag, and placing him in her closet.
According to an arrest affidavit, Lexington police responded to a residence on Park Avenue following a report of an unresponsive infant on a Wednesday. Upon arrival, officers discovered the infant’s body wrapped in a towel and contained within a black trash bag in the closet.
The cheerleader from the University of Kentucky faces charges including the abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence, and concealing the birth of an infant.
Court records show Snelling took selfies during the birth.
