A tragic shooting unfolded at Brown University in Providence on Saturday evening, leaving two individuals dead and several others injured.
At precisely 4:22 p.m., Brown University found itself under lockdown when reports emerged of an active shooter near the Barus & Holley Engineering building.
In response, the university swiftly sent out alerts, advising everyone to lock their doors, silence their phones, and seek shelter. Throughout the night, the school continued to relay updates and provide critical information to the students.
By the evening, university officials confirmed the passing of two students. In total, nine students were hospitalized, with eight initially reported in critical condition.
As of Sunday morning, updates indicated that one student remained in critical condition, based on the latest university alerts.
“Our community grieves deeply for the tragic loss of life,” Brown University officials expressed in a statement. “We lost two of our students yesterday, and one remains in critical yet stable condition.”

Around 11:00 p.m., the Providence Police released a video of a person wearing dark-colored clothes as a person of interest in the shooting.
Providence Deputy Chief of Police Commander Timothy O’Hara stated that the person was seen on Hope Street heading east towards the riverfront.
The entire campus remained in a shelter-in-place status until a little before 6:00 a.m. Sunday, when the University announced it had been lifted.
“Providence police have advised the University that the shelter-in-place order has ended for the entire Brown campus.”
There are still several areas closed off as part of the investigation, according to the university’s alerts.
“There continues to be limited access to some areas of campus as police continue to investigate yesterday’s shooting.”
The areas with limited access are “considered an active crime scene.”
The lifting of the shelter in place came after authorities took the person of interest into custody, and according to Providence’s chief of police, Col. Oscar Perez, no other individuals are being pursued, NBC News reported.
This is an ongoing investigation, and anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to a dedicated tip line at 401-652-5767.
