A Kansas man is set to spend the rest of his life in prison after being convicted of ambushing and murdering his estranged wife upon her return home.

Miguel Flores, aged 35, received a life sentence with no chance of parole for at least 25 years for the murder of 23-year-old Loren Flores, according to an announcement by the Kansas City Police Department. In October, Flores was found guilty of first-degree premeditated murder and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

Authorities reported that by November 21, 2022, the couple was separated and amid divorce proceedings. Loren Flores had been living with friends at a residence near South 52nd Terrace and Metropolitan Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas.

While Loren Flores was out running errands, Miguel Flores parked at the residence and waited on the front porch, as revealed by court documents reviewed by local Fox affiliate WDAF. Witnesses noted his anger, and upon her return, Loren Flores was aware of his demeanor.

She handed her cellphone to a witness, instructing them to call 911 if he became violent. Shortly after, the witness heard a heated argument followed by gunshots. Following the shooting, Miguel Flores fled the scene in a red Dodge Challenger.

Police arrived to discover Loren Flores had been fatally shot. They gathered information from the witness and began the search for her killer.

Miguel Flores had driven to his relative’s home elsewhere in the city, police said. However, when officers approached him at the relative’s residence, he pointed the Glock 10 mm handgun he had used in the murder at them from behind the driver’s side of the car.

Officers demanded he drop the weapon, but he would not, and he even got back in the high-powered vehicle. More law enforcement officers arrived at the scene, where a standoff had ensued. Eventually, Miguel Flores emerged and surrendered the weapon.

Police later determined the gun to be the same caliber as the casings left outside the porch where Miguel Flores shot and killed his wife.
