A pair of 14-year-old Kansas girls were arrested this week for the Labor Day weekend murder of a 93-year-old woman last year.

Joanne R. Johnson was discovered deceased in her residence in Augusta, where she resided by herself. Her passing was determined to be a homicide, as reported by KWCH. Subsequently, eight months following the tragic event, Governor Laura Kelly, along with Johnson’s relatives, announced a ,000 reward. This reward is intended for anyone who can provide valuable information that may lead to the identification and prosecution of the perpetrator.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said it had not identified a relationship between the girls, 13 at the time of the murder, and Johnson, whose family said they did not know the girls.

Family said they were in shock to learn the suspected killers were two young teens but said they were relieved at the breakthrough.

The two girls, who have not been named because of their ages, were arrested on Thursday and charged with first degree murder, according to WDAF. The girls, both from Augusta, are being held in separate juvenile detention centers.
