Briggs was rushed to hospital but was taken off life support and died eight days later on July 23 last year.

A 29-year-old constable and 45-year-old sergeant were suspended from Victoria Police following the death.

Following an investigation, the men were charged today with negligent manslaughter.

Both officers will appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.

Deputy Commissioner Wendy Steendam said the death had been subject to an investigation by the homicide squad with oversight from the Professional Standards Command since last year.

“I understand the news today will be concerning and difficult for many in the community, however I want to reassure them that Victoria Police does not shy away from taking action to uphold community trust and confidence in our organisation,” Steendam said.

“The overwhelming majority of our police do the right thing day in and day out and provide exemplary service to the community.

“Today’s update should not take away from their efforts more broadly.

“However, it is vital that where incidents such as this occur, they are investigated thoroughly regardless of a police officer’s rank, position or tenure.

“Our thoughts today are also with the Briggs family and we will ensure they continue to have a range of support services in place as the matter progresses.”
