Man allegedly steals fire truck, crashes into army base 220km away

A man is set to appear in court following accusations that he commandeered a fire truck in New South Wales, sparking a police chase that spanned into Victoria.

Authorities were alerted around 8:20 p.m. last night when reports emerged of a fire truck allegedly taken from the Bolton Rural Fire Service sheds near Jerilderie, located in southern NSW.

The chase began with NSW Police pursuing the vehicle as it made its way to the Victorian border, crossing over at Tocumwal.

Once in Victoria, local law enforcement picked up the pursuit, tracking the fire truck as it navigated the Murray Valley Highway and onto the Goulburn Valley Highway.

Despite maintaining the speed limit, the driver reportedly refused to pull over.

The chase continued past Shepparton, and it was on the Goulburn Valley Highway that police successfully used stop sticks to bring the truck to a halt.

The truck bypassed Shepparton and continued along the Goulburn Valley Highway where stop sticks were successfully deployed.

The truck continued on to the Puckapunyal Army Base as the tyres deflated.

It is alleged the truck drove through the security access control point and stopped on the base before the driver exited the truck.

The driver allegedly encountered a security guard undertaking routine patrols and stole his unattended vehicle before driving it further on the base.

Stop sticks were again successfully used before the car stopped and the man was arrested by police.

A 31-year-old Hamilton man was arrested and charged with multiple offences including carjacking, two counts of stealing a motor vehicle, criminal damage, and transporting stolen goods.

He will appear in court today.
