A Minnesota man is facing charges after allegedly attempting an audacious jailbreak at a New York detention center. The incident unfolded on Wednesday when Mark Anderson, 35, of Mankato, Minnesota, purportedly tried to orchestrate the escape of Luigi Mangione, an accused killer.

According to reports, Anderson approached the Metropolitan Detention Center’s intake area, where he posed as an FBI agent. He claimed to have official documents, supposedly signed by a judge, mandating Mangione’s release. However, when asked for identification, Anderson presented only a Minnesota driver’s license rather than any official FBI credentials, as reported by NBC News.

Upon inspecting Anderson’s belongings, jail staff discovered a barbecue fork and a steel blade that bore a resemblance to a pizza cutter, rather than any legitimate tools of law enforcement.

In an affidavit, an FBI agent remarked, “I have reviewed those papers [in Anderson’s possession] and they appear to be related to filing claims against the United States Department of Justice.”

Further investigation revealed that Anderson was in New York for a job opportunity, which ultimately did not materialize. A source informed NBC that he had been employed at a pizzeria prior to the incident.

Anderson is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday to face the charges stemming from this unusual episode.
