In an unusual and disturbing sequence of events, a Gainesville man found himself in legal trouble after reportedly exposing himself in public and committing a minor theft. Scotty Lee Oats Jr., aged 32, was taken into custody following incidents at two stores where he allegedly flaunted indecent behavior and walked away with an unpaid fountain drink.
The drama unfolded on April 14, around 1:25 p.m., when Oats was seen standing outside a Circle K at 1515 North Main Street. According to the Gainesville Police Department, Oats completely disrobed before donning a “cutout shirt” that failed to conceal his privates. With this impromptu attire, he entered the convenience store, grabbed a fountain drink, and headed to the cashier. Shocked employees reportedly noticed his exposed state and demanded he cover himself. Ignoring the staff’s protests, Oats allegedly argued with them and left the store without settling the bill for the drink.
Oats’ peculiar journey didn’t end there. He crossed Main Street and proceeded southward, eventually entering another establishment. A witness in this second location confirmed to the police that Oats’ genitals were clearly visible as he walked in, further evidencing his disregard for public decency.
The entire episode at the Circle K was reportedly documented on surveillance footage, providing clear evidence of the events as described by the witnesses and employees.
Oats, whose court records identify him as homeless, now faces charges of petit theft with two or more prior convictions, elevating the charge to a felony, alongside indecent exposure. His criminal history includes a felony conviction for possession of child pornography, and he is registered as a sexual offender. His record also lists eight misdemeanor convictions, one of which was violent, as well as a previous stint in state prison, from which he was released in June 2025. The severity of his actions led Judge Susan Miller-Jones to set his bail at $50,000.
