Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has disclosed that her husband, Yorick Piper, was apprehended for drink-driving while en route to a supermarket in Bendigo yesterday morning.
Piper registered a blood alcohol level of 0.05 percent during a routine breath test. Consequently, he received an immediate fine and his driving privileges were suspended for three months starting January 16.
Allan explained that the previous evening, Piper had been celebrating their son’s birthday with family at a local pub, returning home by 8 PM.
“I was taken aback,” Allan expressed.
“I was truly surprised when Yorick informed me of the incident yesterday morning.”
She noted that the alcohol had interacted with medication Piper uses for a health condition.
”As a result of the medication mixing with the alcohol from the night before, he simply shouldn’t have been driving the following morning,” Allan said.
“He understands that, I understand that and for this we are both truly sorry.
She said Piper was also involved in a minor collision prior to being stopped at the RBT, rear-ending another vehicle at the T-intersection of Spring Gully Road and Carpenter Street.
She said neither driver was injured and the pair exchanged details.
The couple have made a $1000 donation to Amber Community, a non-profit that provides support and information around road trauma.
“Drink driving is an incredibly serious issue and so is road trauma, we recognise that and I am truly sorry,” Allan said.
