A 77-year-old West Virginia man was arrested on Monday on charges of attempting to murder his wife, according to local authorities.
Police responded to a distress call around 4 a.m. from the man’s wife. She reported that her husband, identified as Warren Bruce Crowder, was trying to break into a bedroom where she had locked herself in, using an axe to force the door open, as reported by WOWK.
Upon arrival, officers observed the scene through the bedroom window, witnessing Crowder attempting to kick the door in while his wife remained inside. Despite their orders, Crowder refused to unlock the door, as detailed in the criminal complaint.
Police then forcibly entered the residence and apprehended Crowder. During the arrest, he allegedly confessed to firing a gun through the door in an effort to reach his wife. Officers noted several bullet holes in the door and fragments scattered within the bedroom.
Crowder reportedly expressed anger during the incident, admitting to authorities that he was aware his wife was hiding just a few feet away from the door, lying on the bed.
His wife confirmed that she was seated on the bed, positioned no more than six feet from the door, during the ordeal.
According to WCHS, the couple had gotten into some kind of argument.
Crowder was charged with attempted murder and wanton endangerment. He was given a $50,000 cash-only bond.
