A woman’s unruly conduct on an international flight led to an unscheduled landing in Perth, where authorities detained her.
The 37-year-old, a resident of Melbourne, now faces charges for offensive and disorderly actions that jeopardized aircraft safety.
The incident unfolded on Sunday when the flight took off from Melbourne, heading towards Thailand.
Reports indicate she began displaying erratic behavior, escalating to verbally assaulting both passengers and the flight crew.
The aircraft had no choice but to divert to Perth Airport. There, Australian Federal Police boarded the plane and apprehended the woman after she refused to disembark voluntarily.
AFP Acting Superintendent Peter Brindal condemned the alleged misconduct, highlighting its impact on both crew and passengers.
“Any kind of aggressive or anti-social behaviour on a flight can pose a direct threat to the safety of the aircraft, and passengers onboard,” he said.
“The AFP works closely with the airline industry to intervene if anyone interferes with the safety of workers or the public in, or around, an airport, or on flights.”
If found guilty, the woman faces a maximum fine of $16,500.
She is next due to appear in court on May 11.
