A Kansas resident with a prior DUI record is accused of drinking at a bar, driving a vehicle sans an ignition interlock device — contravening her probation conditions — and hitting another car head-on, resulting in the fatality of a woman and serious injury to her spouse.

Kayla Errebo, aged 32, faces charges including second-degree murder, aggravated battery, and reckless driving, following the demise of 55-year-old Deanna June Sommerfeld. The incident reportedly occurred when Errebo veered across the center line, colliding with Sommerfeld’s vehicle Friday morning on State Road 140 in Saline County, centrally located in Kansas.

Previously, Errebo was on probation after entering a no contest plea for evading law enforcement and a second DUI offense. Documentation reveals DUIs in January 2024 and again about five months afterward. Her probationary period was a year, anticipating completion by November 2025.

Her probation stipulated she must abstain from alcohol, avoid bars, and only operate a vehicle with an ignition interlock device. Authorities claim she breached all these conditions.

Errebo purportedly confessed to consuming alcohol at a bar Thursday night. She is also accused of operating a vehicle not fitted with the interlock device, which ensures a driver’s breath is alcohol-free before the vehicle can be started.

In addition to her husband, Sommerfeld also had two sons, according to a GoFundMe page. Sommerfeld’s friends told Wichita CBS affiliate KWCH that she was kind and eager to help others.

“Never get behind the wheel while you’re drinking,” one of Sommerfeld’s friends said in an interview with the TV station. “Unfortunately, this person hasn’t learned that lesson, and it cost the life of our good friend.”

Errebo remains in the Saline County Jail on a $1 million bond. She faces more than 40 years behind bars. Her next court date is scheduled for Aug. 22.
