In a troubling incident from Indiana, a man has confessed to shooting at an Uber carrying his pregnant girlfriend. The violent episode unfolded after an argument between the couple, with the man using an AR-style rifle to target the vehicle as she attempted to flee.

According to a probable cause affidavit reported by The Journal Gazette, Michael Ward threatened his girlfriend with ominous words: “I’m going to get my gun and cash out.” This threat preceded the shooting, which took place just before 8:55 a.m. on April 17. The confrontation escalated to attempted murder and gun charges as he fired at the Uber his girlfriend had called in an effort to escape.

Ward recently entered a plea agreement, resulting in a reduction of charges to criminal recklessness. If the judge approves this plea deal, Ward could face a prison sentence of up to six years, as noted by the Gazette.

The affidavit detailing the incident describes how Ward discharged approximately three rounds at the vehicle. This attack shattered the rear window and flattened a tire on the passenger side. Police found three shell casings at the scene, underscoring the severity of the assault.

During the incident, Ward allegedly aimed his rifle at both his girlfriend and the Uber driver, who was operating a Jeep Wrangler. He was initially seated in a Buick LeSabre but exited the vehicle to retrieve his firearm before opening fire, according to law enforcement accounts.

Ward was accused of pointing his AR-style rifle at both his girlfriend and the Uber driver, who was in a Jeep Wrangler, before opening fire. Ward was sitting in a Buick LeSabre when the Uber pulled up and got out to retrieve his weapon before he started blasting, according to police.

The alleged death threat that Ward hurled at his pregnant partner came several hours before the shooting while they were arguing over an undisclosed matter. “Fine, then,” he told the woman before threatening her, according to the affidavit.

Ward’s girlfriend said she had been in a relationship with him for one year and he was aware that she was carrying a child. She was described in the affidavit as being fearful and afraid of Ward, who has a previous battery conviction stemming from an incident two years ago with another individual, the Gazette reports.

Ward has been ordered to stay away from his girlfriend as part of his plea deal. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 4.
