A man was taken into custody, and another is on the run following a suspected robbery at a Bristol, Virginia gas station early Tuesday.

The Washington County Virginia Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies arrived at a Shell station on Lee Highway near Exit 10 off Interstate 81 just after midnight on Tuesday.

Police discovered the front door was heavily damaged, with broken glass and signs of a break-in. A female witness indicated to the officers that a man confessed to her about breaking into the store and was last spotted heading south on Lee Highway.

Sheriff’s deputies, along with Virginia State Police (VSP) troopers, located the suspect near the Evergreen Motel and identified him as Josh Adam Cordle, 34, of Damascus. The release said Cordle was found in possession of stolen items and made “several unsolicited admissions regarding the break-in.”

Cordle was taken into custody and transported to the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail without incident, according to the release.

Cordle was charged with the following:

  • Statutory Burglary, in violation of § 18.2-91 of the Code of Virginia.
  • Unlawfully Deface or Destroy Any Property, in violation of § 18.2-137 of the Code of Virginia.
  • Petit Larceny, in violation of § 18.2-96 of the Code of Virginia.
  • Intoxicated in Public, in violation of § 18.2-388 of the Code of Virginia.

Upon reviewing surveillance footage, the sheriff’s office said Cordle’s involvement was confirmed. A second male suspect was revealed, as well, who was observed entering the store after the initial break-in and stealing numerous packs of cigarettes, the release said.

The second suspect was identified as Anthony James Zampagna, 28, of Johnson City, Tenn. Arrest warrants were issued for Zampagna for charges that include the following:

  • Statutory Burglary, in violation of § 18.2-91 of the Code of Virginia
  • Petit Larceny, in violation of § 18.2-96 of the Code of Virginia

Zampagna remains at large, according to the release.

The sheriff’s office said anyone with information on Zampagna’s whereabouts is urged to call 9-1-1 or the Washington County, VA Sheriff’s Office at 276-676-6000.
