Fans have eagerly anticipated updates on The Old Guard 2, the much-awaited sequel to The Old Guard, a Netflix original film featuring Charlize Theron, released in 2020. After learning that the movie entered production in 2022, fans experienced three years of silence. However, we now finally have an Old Guard 2 trailer, and we’re just months away from the release date on July 2, 2025. What could be a more exciting way to celebrate July 4th than watching a showdown between Theron and Thurman (Uma, that is) in a sudden death match?
In the trailer, which is available to watch in the video player above, Andy (Theron) reunites with her immortal team and joyfully takes down adversaries. As Andy says in the trailer: “Listen, sometimes quick is better than subtle.”
The trailer further introduces a new antagonist, played by Kill Bill star Uma Thurman, who threatens Andy by saying she will “destroy you and everything you stand for, with a power you can’t even imagine yet.” In the trailer’s final moment, the two immortals face off in what appears to be an epic sword battle. Two of Hollywood’s top female action stars going toe-to-toe? Yes, please!
And for all the Joe and Nicky shippers out there, we also get a sweet, though brief moment between the two centuries-old lovers. The two men hold each other tenderly, gazing into each other’s eyes. Though their romance was not a big part of the first movie, it was a big deal to witness such a heartfelt romance, and kiss, between two men in a high-budget superhero movie. Marvel could never!
Director Victoria Mahoney takes over for Gina Prince-Bythewood, who directed the first Old Guard movie. Original comics writer Greg Rucka once again returns as the screenwriter of this sequel, which finds immortals Andy, Nile (KiKi Layne), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), and Nicky (Luca Marinelli) once again facing the ruthless Quynh (Veronica Ngô), who has escaped from her underwater prison. The team also faces a new threat: the first-ever immortal named Discord (Thurman). With the help of old friend James Copely (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and new friend Tuah (Henry Golding), Andy and her team once again set out to save the world by kicking ass and taking names.
The Old Guard 2 will begin streaming on Netflix on July 2, 2025. We’re counting down the days.
