Sir David Beckham recently shared an amusing anecdote about his children’s reactions to his knighthood. The renowned 50-year-old former football star, who has been honored for his contributions to sports and charity, recalled how his kids wondered if his new title would grant them any special advantages.

David, who has sons Brooklyn, 27, Romeo, 23, Cruz, 21, and a daughter Harper, 14, with his wife Victoria, 51, was knighted by King Charles at a ceremony in Windsor Castle last November. Although his family celebrated with him, his estranged son Brooklyn was notably absent from the event.

The knighthood recognized David’s significant impact in the world of football over two decades and his ongoing ambassadorial work with UNICEF. Despite the serious nature of the accolade, his children, known for their own ventures in the public eye, humorously inquired about potential perks they might enjoy as a result of his elevated status.

While speaking on talkSPORT Drive with hosts Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent, David recounted how his children questioned whether the title of “Sir” might afford them “any more privileges,” adding a light-hearted twist to his prestigious achievement.

Now, David has revealed that his kids – who are some of the most famous celebrity offspring in the country and have tried their hand at various careers in the spotlight – hoped they would also benefit from his knighthood.

Speaking on talkSPORT Drive with Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent on Friday, David said his children asked if they would get ‘any more privileges’ when he became a Sir.

‘I was like, well, apart from the ones that you’ve already got? Absolutely not,’ he said.

Asked about what changed in his life after he was knighted, David said: ‘The only thing that changed was my notepaper that I send out to people, thank you letters. That’s the only thing that really changed.

‘My kids turn around to me and said, “Dad, do we get any privileges like, any more?” I know that’s what I said to them.

‘I was like, “well, apart from the ones that you’ve already got, absolutely not”.’

He added: ‘It was one of the best… probably the best day of my life, you know, other than obviously when my kids were born and when I got married.’

Elsewhere in the interview, David gushed over his youngest son Cruz’s budding music career.

‘Cruz has been kind of, you know, working on his music since he was about eight or nine years old – and he’s all of a sudden got a band together,’ he said.

‘He’s released an album. It’s Cruz Beckham and the Breakers. They’re doing incredibly well. They’re traveling around the UK. They were in Bristol. They were in Brighton. They were in Birmingham. They were in Paris, Amsterdam.

‘So they’re going around Europe and now they’re back in London for three shows and he’s performing tonight. I’m very proud of him because he’s worked really hard. So good stuff.’

David also said his mum Sandra has been fangirling over Cruz, adding: ‘She was fangirling my son last night because Cruz was performing in London and she turned up to watch him and was buying merchandise and getting him to sign it.’

The Beckham family have been supporting Cruz’s debut tour with his band.

Earlier this week, an emotional Cruz struggled to hold back tears while performing a song widely thought to be about his brother Brooklyn’ family estrangement.

The trendy singer lost his characteristically cool composure while performing the group’s new single, Loneliest Boy – understood to be filled with barely veiled references to his wayward brother’s continued absence.

With brother Romeo and supportive parents David and Victoria Beckham watching from the audience, Cruz faltered over the song’s plaintive lyrics, prompting band-member Dan Ewins to drape a reassuring arm across his shoulders.

Emotions appeared to run high as the tearful singer wiped his eyes with a baggy shirt-sleeve while delivering the track’s chorus, which features the telling lyrics, ‘Loneliest boy, mama don’t talk too much, it’s breaking her heart.’

Earlier this month, estranged older brother Brooklyn dealt another blow to his devastated parents as he failed to mention Victoria on Mother’s Day, though praised his mother-in-law on social media.

Looking on from their seats at the tiny east London venue, his family members were visibly moved by the performance, with Romeo seen wiping away a tear as he looked up at the stage.

One concert-goer told The Mirror: ‘At one point during the song, he seemed overcome with emotion as his bandmate put his arm around his shoulder and affectionately ruffled his hair.’

Cruz and Brooklyn are on opposite sides of a widening and increasingly toxic family feud

Fans have been left convinced that the song is about Brooklyn’s widening estrangement from his family.

Additional lyrics read: ‘It shows in the small things that you don’t do, I guess in the end that it’s you, yourself, and you. Tell me how do you live, when you’ve got nobody to lose?

‘Loneliest boy, place all your bets on him, To find something bad in somebody good, he always does, Loneliest boy, I hope that you’re listening, Don’t push all your friends away, when we’re tryna show you love.’

Elsewhere, the chorus reads: ‘So tell me you’re scared, and that you need someone to hold. Cause you’re in the room but really, does it even show?

‘But, why can’t they see that you’re a million miles away, They’ll never know, when you look so close.’

In January, Brooklyn released an explosive six-page statement featuring lurid allegations about his family, notably the astonishing claim that Victoria usurped his first wedding dance with wife Nicola Peltz.

Brooklyn Beckham’s statement in full

I have been silent for years and made every effort to keep these matters private. Unfortunately, my parents and their team have continued to go to the press, leaving me with no choice but to speak for myself and tell the truth about only some of the lies that have been printed.

I do not want to reconcile with my family. I’m not being controlled, I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life. For my entire life, my parents have controlled narratives in the press about our family. The performative social media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships have been a fixture of the life I was born into.

Recently, I have seen with my own eyes the lengths that they’ll go through to place countless lies in the media, mostly at the expense of innocent people, to preserve their own facade. But I believe the truth always comes out.

My parents have been trying endlessly to ruin my relationship since before my wedding, and it hasn’t stopped. My mum cancelled making Nicola’s dress in the eleventh hour despite how excited she was to wear her design, forcing her to urgently find a new dress.

Weeks before our big day, my parents repeatedly pressured and attempted to bribe me into signing away the rights to my name, which would have affected me, my wife, and our future children.

They were adamant on me signing before my wedding date because then the terms of the deal would be initiated. My holdout affected the payday, and they have never treated me the same since.

During the wedding planning, my mum went so far as to call me “evil” because Nicola and I chose to include my Nanny Sandra, and Nicola’s Naunni at our table, because they both didn’t have their husbands. Both of our parents had their own tables equally adjacent to ours.

The night before our wedding, members of my family told me that Nicola was “not blood” and “not family.” Since the moment I started standing up for myself with my family, I’ve received endless attacks from my parents, both privately and publicly, that were sent to the press on their orders.

Even my brothers were sent to attack me on social media, before they ultimately blocked me out of nowhere this last Summer.

My mum hijacked my first dance with my wife, which had been planned weeks in advance to a romantic love song. In front of our 500 wedding guests, Marc Anthony called me to the stage, where in the schedule was planned to be my romantic dance with my wife but instead my mum was waiting to dance with me instead.

She danced very inappropriately on me in front of everyone. I’ve never felt more uncomfortable or humiliated in my entire life. We wanted to renew our vows so we could create new memories of our wedding day that bring us joy and happiness, not anxiety and embarrassment.

My wife has been consistently disrespected by my family, no matter how hard we’ve tried to come together as one. My mum has repeatedly invited women from my past into our lives in ways that were clearly intended to make us both uncomfortable.

Despite this, we still travelled to London for my dad’s birthday and were rejected for a week as we waited in our hotel room trying to plan quality time with him. He refused all of our attempts, unless it was at his big birthday party with a hundred guests and cameras at every corner.

When he finally agreed to see me, it was under the condition that Nicola wasn’t invited. It was a slap in the face. Later, when my family travelled to LA, they refused to see me at all.

My family values public promotion and endorsements above all else. Brand Beckham comes first. Family “love” is decided by how much you post on social media, or how quickly you drop everything to show up and pose for a family photo opp, even if it’s at the expense of our professional obligations.

We’ve gone out of our way for years to show up and support at every fashion show, every party, and every press activity to show ‘our perfect family.’ But the one time my wife asked for my mum’s support to save displaced dogs during the LA fires, my mum refused.

The narrative that my wife controls me is completely backwards. I have been controlled by my parents for most of my life. I grew up with overwhelming anxiety. For the first time in my life, since stepping away from my family, that anxiety has disappeared.

I wake up every morning grateful for the life I chose, and have found peace and relief. My wife and I do not want a life shaped by image, press, or manipulation. All we want peace, privacy and happiness for us and our future family.
