Amaju Pinnick vs Davido: Court rejects singer’s request for stay of proceedings

Davido and Pinnick eventually come to terms to settle out of court, and he will be performing at ‘Warri Again’ concert.

A Delta High Court in Effurun has granted an out-of-court settlement between Brownhill Investment Company and David Adeleke, popularly referred to as Davido.

On Thursday, Justice Michael Obi of High Court Three in Effurun congratulated both parties for their laudable determination to settle the dispute peacefully outside of court.

“I commend both parties for exploring an amicable resolution to settle out of court,” Obi said.
According to the report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Brownhill Investment Company is owned by Amaju Pinnick, the former President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

In October 2023, Brownhill Investment Company initiated a legal action marked EHC/183/2023 before the court against the afrobeat singer Davido and his music label, Davido Music Worldwide Limited, as joint defendants. NAN recalls that the company filed the suit against the defendants due to an alleged breach of contract related to their failure to perform at the 19th edition of the ‘Warri Again Concert’.

In the lawsuit, the appellant sought a sum of ₦2 billion as general damages from the defendants for their alleged failure to fulfill the contract for the concert. Additionally, Pinnick’s company requested ₦150 million for legal and professional fees, along with an additional ₦30 million for filing costs.

Following the court’s decision, counsel to the defendants, Oladayo Ogungbe, informed NAN after the court proceedings that both parties had successfully pursued an out-of-court settlement.

“Davido is coming again to Warri on October 4 to perform – that forms part of the settlement.

“It’s fine. It is better than going through the rigours of litigations.

“Both parties consider the option of having the matter settled out of court, which in my opinion as a lawyer, is the best approach to any litigation.

“It is a win-win situation to both parties,” Ogungbe added.
