If you’ve been tuning into Apple TV+’s drama Your Friends and Neighbors, you’re aware that Jon Hamm’s character Coop is guilty of several misdeeds. Stealing from his neighbors? Obviously. Neglecting responsibilities and consequently losing his wife (Amanda Peet) and kids? Absolutely. But the murder of Paul Levitt (Jordan Gelber)? That’s not an offense he can be blamed for. So, who is the culprit? Well, it’s complicated.
**Spoilers ahead for Your Friends and Neighbors Season 1**
After nine episodes, we finally discover who killed Paul and how, along with whether Paul will face consequences for the crimes viewers witnessed in the first half of the season. If you believe all loose ends are neatly tied up, you might need to reconsider. Things have become even more chaotic for Coop, Mel, and the rest of Westmont Village, and secrets are eager to emerge, particularly those Coop unearthed during his series of robberies.
Keep reading for Decider’s comprehensive breakdown of the Season 1 finale of Your Friends and Neighbors, including how the conclusion hints at developments in Season 2.
Your Friends and Neighbors Season 1 Ending Explained:
Heading into the finale, Coop is still facing charges related to Paul’s murder with police believing he had means and motives — remember, he was secretly shacking up with Samantha Levitt (Olivia Munn) — as well as the gun used to kill Paul. Officers found it in the trunk of his car while executing a search warrant of his home, eventually arresting him at Paul’s memorial service with the entirety of Westmont Village watching in shock.
After being released on bond thanks to the help of his father (Michael O’Keefe), Coop immediately gets to work to try and prove his innocence in Paul’s murder. It’s during a conversation with his lawyer, Kat Resnick (Heather Lind), that they discover Sam was using a secret burner phone for all their communications during their relationship. While Sam had initially been ruled out as a suspect because her phone records traced her back to her parents’ home in Boston at the time of the murder, the discovery of the second phone brings her whereabouts into question in the eyes of Kat and Coop.
Immediately, Coop contacts Elena (Aimee Carrero), who begrudgingly offers to pick up a cleaning shift at Sam’s house to give them an opportunity to look for the second phone. During the search, the pair find a suicide note from Paul, which says he took his own life after realizing he never should have let Sam and their kids go. This leads Coop and Elena to the conclusion that no one killed Paul but Sam had chosen to cover up his suicide by shooting his dead body to stage the scene as a homicide. At the end of the day, it all comes back to money in Westmont Village and Sam realized that she would not see a penny of Paul’s life insurance if it looked like he had taken his own life.
After shooting Paul’s dead body, she planted the gun used in Coop’s trunk, attempting to frame him for the murder. Why? Because she was mad that Coop had disrespected her and would never give their relationship a chance so long as he is still in love with Mel. After returning from running errands while Elena “cleaned,” Coop confronts Sam and tells her that he plans to take the whole story to the police, including the suicide note. Sam attempts to stop him by pulling a gun, but she cannot bring herself to shoot him and he walks out the door.
The first season of Your Friends and Neighbors ends with Coop walking free of both the charges against him for Paul’s murder, and also from any suspicion for robbing his neighbors. What’s more, he walks back into his old job where they are now offering a lucrative package to return and build bridges with a client they are on the verge of losing. He ultimately accepts the job but says he cannot make a non-negotiable event due to a prior commitment.
After attending a gala, we see Coop get in his car, seemingly to head off to the airport for his business meeting. Not so fast, though. In all actuality, Coop heads to his boss’s house to pull off another job, lurking in the darkness as the plane takes off and driving away with what appears to be a piece of art that he intends to sell.
Will he continue with his crime spree after this? Will he start trying to get back together with Mel? Is he going to continue to try and live a double life, now back at his old firm? These questions will have to be answered in the second season, which we expect to hit Apple TV+ sometime in 2026.
