Carrie Underwood’s fans are in awe following the reemergence of her American Idol audition tape from over two decades ago, showcasing a dramatic transformation.

The country music sensation, now 42, catapulted into fame after clinching victory in the fourth season of the renowned singing competition in 2005.

Recently, social media has been buzzing as fans revisit the nostalgic moment through viral footage of her initial audition.

While many fans expressed admiration for the audition that set her career in motion, others were surprised by how different she appeared during her early days on the show.

The popular Instagram account NostalgiaChick recently shared a snippet from Underwood’s audition, drawing attention to her fashion choices at the time.

“Carrie Underwood didn’t just win American Idol in 2005; she also dominated the Y2K fashion scene,” remarked the social media influencer, as the clip of Underwood’s performance for the Idol judges played in the background.

The young Underwood donned a simple pink off-the-shoulder top over a lacy tank top and some blue jeans.

Her blonde locks were left in crimped curls around her face.

A popular Instagram account known as NostalgiaChick shared a clip from her audition this week and it went viral

Many fans rushed to the comment section of the clip to reflect on how far she’s come – and how much she had changed over the last two decades.

‘She doesn’t even really look like the same person. In fact in the pink outfit, I thought she was Hilary Duff for a split second,’ one user wrote. 

‘She doesn’t even look like the same person,’ added another.

‘Her face has changed,’ agreed someone else. 

‘Her face, those lips… She looks nothing like she used to too,’ read a fourth comment.

A fifth said: ‘She looks nothing like herself.’

Over the years, Underwood has sparked plastic surgery speculation on numerous occasions due to her changing appearance.

She has been open about undergoing surgery after she suffered a nasty fall in 2017 that left her needing more than 40 stitches in her face.

After the accident the Oklahoma-born singer admitted she felt forced to speak out to avoid being accused of having plastic surgery for cosmetic reasons. 

She told the Ellen DeGeneres show in 2018: ‘I feel like I do [look different] a little bit. My biggest worry at the time was like, if I say nothing then later on… I feel like people are gonna say, ‘What has she done to herself electively?’

‘And it definitely was not a choice. I feel close to myself. I feel pretty close to normal.’ 

In the same year, the Grammy award winner addressed rumors that she had gotten a ‘nose job’ or ‘other work done’ on her face.

She said: ‘The truth is just as interesting I wish I’d gotten some awesome plastic surgery to make this [scar] look better, but I try not to worry too much about it.’

In January 2025, Dr Daniel Barrett, a Beverly Hills based plastic surgeon who did not treat Underwood directly said he suspected that the singer has had a nose job, lip filler and Botox.  

‘If you look at the nose, there’s more of a swoop and pinched tip which could indicate a possible rhinoplasty,’ he said on TikTok.

‘The lips for sure in my opinion look like they’ve had some work done. I love Carrie Underwood but this is my unbiased opinion of what she’s had done.

‘The other thing is her cheeks are looking pretty full and her forehead is completely flat. She’s probably had some sort of Botox or a little bit of filler in the cheeks.’ 

He also theorized she had a ‘chin implant,’ adding: ‘I think the chin looks great. But if you look back at her previous photos, her chin is pretty prominent there too so I don’t think she’s had a chin implant.’
