Uche Ojeh, Today anchor Sheinelle Jones‘ husband of 17 years, has passed away after a battle with brain cancer. He was 45.
Jones’ Today co-anchors gathered together on the show Friday (May 23) to announce the news.
“With deep sorrow, we announce this morning that Uche Ojeh, the spouse of our colleague and TODAY co-host Sheinelle Jones, has passed away following a valiant fight against an aggressive brain cancer known as glioblastoma,” Savannah Guthrie shared on the show.
She continued, “There are no words to express the heartbreak we feel for Sheinelle and their three young children. Uche was a remarkable individual. We all cherished him. We would like to take this moment to tell you more about the extraordinary man who was Sheinelle’s ideal partner in life.”
Jones shared a clip of the touching moment on her social media, writing, “Thank you, for all of your love and support.”
As reported by Today.com, the couple first crossed paths as students at Northwestern University when Jones, then a freshman aged 18, gave him a campus tour. They went on to marry in 2007.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Ojeh was a consultant at UAO Consulting for over 10 years.
Jones has been on a leave of absence from the show since January. She announced on social media that she would be “taking time to deal with a family health matter.”
On Today, Craig Melvin praised Ojeh and shared that he had played golf with Ojeh last fall.
“We had a number of conversations about just life in general,” Melvin recounted on the show. “And one thing he always talked about, he talked about those kids. He loved those kids more than anything else in this world, and was just so proud. He was that dad that was on the sideline every soccer game. He was at all the concerts and the recitals.”
“He was that guy, and they had such a beautiful love story,” he continued.
Ojeh is survived by Jones and their three children, Kayin, Uche, and Clara.
