Kelechi Iheanacho scored his first league goal for Middlesbrough, inspiring a 2-1 comeback win over Oxford United at the Riverside Stadium.
The Nigerian striker, who arrived at Boro on loan from Sevilla in January, scored three minutes into the second half, equalizing Michal Helik’s goal for Oxford.
Brazilian defender Neto Borges then sealed the win with a close-range finish in the 80th minute.
The victory marks Middlesbrough’s third consecutive home league win, boosting their push for a Championship playoff spot.
Michael Carrick’s team is now tied on points with sixth-place West Bromwich Albion, and Coventry City is merely two points ahead with seven games remaining in the season.
For Iheanacho, whose form at Middlesbrough has been inconsistent, this goal is a timely boost.
At 28, he was not included in Nigeria’s squad for the March international fixtures but hopes to capitalize on his performance as Boro seeks promotion.
Middlesbrough, currently seventh in the table, will next face Blackburn Rovers on Friday, April 4, 2025.
