Any show revolving around a vicious drug-smuggling operation lurking beneath the facade of a seemingly serene small town is bound to captivate its audience. Netflix’s The Waterfront is no different — the new drama quickly rose to the top of Netflix’s Top 10 following its release, and after a finale filled with relentless surprises, viewers are eagerly awaiting hints of Season 2.
Situated along the North Carolina coast, The Waterfront portrays the Buckley family as they navigate the challenges of maintaining their fishing empire. When family leader Harlan (Holt McCallany) experiences two heart attacks, his son Cane (Jake Weary) and wife Belle (Maria Bello) are forced to engage in business with an underground drug cartel to secure funds. They are also tasked with supporting Bree (Melissa Benoist), Cane’s sister who is recovering from alcoholism and aims to reunite with her son after losing custody.
The finale delivered a storm of surprises: after drug lord Grady (Topher Grace) shoots Bree and tosses her overboard, Harlan and Cane come to her rescue and exact vengeance, leaving Grady to meet his fate at the bottom of the sea. Everything seems calm within the Buckley family until Belle secretly meets with Emmett Parker (Terry Serpico), a member of a significantly more influential crime family, hinting at a covert alliance against her husband.
Will we get to see the aftermath of this earth-shattering finale? Here’s what we know about The Waterfront Season 2.
Has The Waterfront Been Greenlit for Season 2?
No, not yet. The series just premiered on June 19, so it may be a while before we receive definitive news of a series renewal. No need to panic — the show has raked in massive amounts of success and critical acclaim in its first week, so it’s probably only a matter of time until Season 2 gets announced.
When Might The Waterfront Season 2 Premiere?
It’s hard to say at this point. If the show does get renewed, the new season may not go into production until next year. So to those fans of The Waterfront casting out their line for a premiere date, you might have to wait a while before reeling in a big one.
What Does The Creator Have To Say About The Waterfront Season 2?
Fans aren’t the only ones hoping for a new season. Series creator Kevin Williamson shares his thoughts on a possible Season 2 with TV Insider: “The end of the first season feels like it’s still moving because you don’t want it to stop, right? So that’s a good sign, I think, for Season 2. I would like to see it just keep moving. I would like to see the family come together to stave off some universal villain.” Let’s hope we get to see that soon.
The Waterfront is available to stream on Netflix.
