Viewers of Lorraine on ITV have shared heart-breaking stories in support of assisted dying.

Former Scottish Conservative Party leader Ruth Davidson came on the show this morning to talk about her support for legalising assisted dying – ahead of an important vote on the issue later today.

Davidson had previously voted no to legalising the practice, but said she’s since realised the benefits of it.

She highlighted how the British Medical Association is no longer opposed to assisted dying, as well as her own experiences. Davidson said to Lorraine Kelly that the amount of choice available around birth should also be available around death.

She said: “There’s so much agency and control around birth now. And yet we offer nothing to people who are in unbelievable pain when they’re dying about how they can do that.”

Many ITV viewers agreed, and tweeted why they personally supported assisted dying. Karen Pearson wrote: “#Lorraine listening to #ruthdavidson talking about assisted dying. We must do more to make this a reality. I watched my husband die in pain from cancer and wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.”

Dan Evans tweeted: “#Lorraine my friends Aunty had terminal cancer over a year ago and wanted to be with her husband. She died in pain last month. I’m for Assisted dying.” Similarly, Lisa Mou said: “Make Assisted Dying Legal! #lorraine If I become terminally ill, I would like to choose to die without my loved ones seeing me suffer.”

CEO of Dignity in dying Sarah Wootton said: “[email protected] elegantly explaining how Lord Forsyth’s amendment simply breaks the deadlock on @dignityindying in Westminster. Opponents to choice in dying prefer the rigged system where no private member’s bill can succeed without Government time. #YesToDignity #Lorraine”

Davidson described her and her partner’s experience using IVF and the amount of choice they’d had, saying she hoped people in pain at the end of their life could have the same amount of choice.

@BelindaConniss7 said: “I’ve so much more respect for @RuthDavidsonPC on @lorraine #lorraine this morning discussing #assisteddying a topic which so many including myself agree with. #itstimetotalk #letsdothis”
