“Fresh start” is one way to describe the Grizzlies after a momentous offseason. “Hard pivot” is another.

In June, Memphis traded shooting guard Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic, receiving guards Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Cole Anthony, along with four future first-round picks. This trade marked the end of an era for the Grizzlies, as Bane, Jackson, and point guard Ja Morant had established a trio seen as the foundation for one of the future league contenders.

During the retooling, Memphis underscored its commitment to Jackson as a key part of its core, extending his contract for five years at $240 million in July. (It’s worth mentioning that Bane was traded just one season into his own five-year contract.)

“I wasn’t too much surprised,” Jackson remarked regarding Bane’s exit. “I mean, when your brothers leave, you still feel the pain because you’re human. But ultimately, it’s a business. And we’re grown.”

Jackson mentioned that his perspective after the trade was to embrace a more prominent leadership role and ensure that the younger team members weren’t caught off guard by the unpredictability of an NBA offseason.

“You’re going to near your prime, and things will transform for you,” he expressed. “I feel this is an excellent starting point for a whole new journey. I’m approaching this year with that focused, determined mindset to lead us to the promised land.”
