CHICAGO (WLS) — Tragedy struck the Chicago Police Department as Deputy Chief William Betancourt passed away on Saturday due to a medical emergency, as confirmed by the department.
At the time of the incident, Betancourt was not on duty.

Footage revealed a solemn procession of Chicago Police Department vehicles, making their way to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office on Saturday morning.
In a heartfelt statement, the CPD expressed that “Deputy Chief Betancourt exemplified the true spirit of public service and leadership throughout his tenure with the department. His absence will be profoundly felt by his fellow officers. We urge the people of Chicago to hold the Betancourt family in their thoughts during this challenging period.”
Alderman Gilbert Villegas, representing the 36th Ward, also shared his condolences, stating, “Today, we grieve the loss of Deputy Chief William Betancourt. Our sympathies extend to his family, friends, and the Chicago Police Department during this time of sorrow. Deputy Chief Betancourt was a longstanding collaborator with the 36th Ward and my office, demonstrating commitment and ambition for community betterment through his daily efforts. It was a privilege to regard him as both a colleague and a friend. My heartfelt condolences go out to the Betancourt family. May his legacy be cherished.”
