Kristen Stewart has expressed a strong interest in leaving the United States to pursue filmmaking opportunities abroad. She intends to create movies internationally and then bring them to American audiences, a bold statement reflecting her thoughts on the evolving Hollywood scene under Donald Trump’s influence.
The 35-year-old actress had a well-publicized conflict with Trump back in 2012, long before he embarked on his political journey. Trump, then a businessman renowned for his public outbursts, criticized Stewart on social media during her widely reported cheating scandal.
In a recent interview with the Sunday Times, Stewart revisited her perspective on Trump and candidly shared that she struggles to envision a future for herself in America. Her comments resonate with her past experiences and the broader changes she perceives in the film industry.
Stewart, known for her role in the Twilight series, recently ventured into directing with her debut film, “The Chronology of Water.” The film is an adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s intense 2011 memoir, which chronicles the author’s battles with childhood trauma and addiction.
The actress revealed that she chose Latvia as the filming location for this project, citing that it would have been unfeasible to film such a story in the United States.
In a move that could potentially affect international filmmaking, Trump announced last year his intention to impose a 100% tariff on films produced outside the U.S., calling them a “National Security threat.” This stance stands in contrast to the industry’s common practice of blending domestic and international production locations, affecting both large-scale and independent films.

The actress, 35, endured her own public clash with the US President back in 2012, before he realised his political ambitions, when the thrice-married businessman, 79, went on a public rant at her on X during her cheating scandal (seen this week)
Kristen branded the proposed tariffs ‘terrifying’ for the film industry and said she foresaw her being forced to move abroad to create movies instead.
Asked whether she thought she’d stay in States, the Oscar-nominee – who currently splits her time between Los Angeles and New York – replied: ‘Probably not. I can’t work freely there’.
However, she voiced her desire to still make films for US audiences, adding: ‘But I don’t want to give up completely. I’d like to make movies in Europe and then shove them down the throat of the American people.’
The Spencer star hit out at Trump, but insisted that it was still possible to create change, saying: ‘Reality is breaking completely under Trump. But we should take a page out of his book and create the reality we want to live in.’
Trump infamously had some harsh words for Kristen in 2012, were he made multiple tweets about her love life and then-boyfriend Robert Pattinson, over the span of a month.
His rant came after news broke of Kristen’s infidelity with her Snow White And The Huntsman director Rupert Sanders, who was himself married at the time, while she was in a relationship with Twilight co-star Robert.
Trump – who infamously left his first wife Ivana Trump for her successor Marla Maples in 1992 – took to X to fume: ‘Robert Pattinson should not take back. She cheated on him like a dog & will do it again–just watch. He can do much better!’
The mogul followed it up with a slew of more angry tweets, including: ‘Everyone knows I am right that Robert Pattinson should dump Kristen Stewart. In a couple of years, he will thank me. Be smart, Robert.’

‘Lots of response to my Pattinson/reunion. She will cheat again–100 certain–am I ever wrong?’
‘Robert Pattinson is putting on a good face for the release of Twilight. He took my advice on…I hope!’
‘After Friday’s Twilight release, I hope Robert Pattinson will not be seen in public with–she will cheat on him again!’
Kristen later reflected on the ‘insane’ rant years later, speaking to Variety at the Sundance Film Festival on the day of Trump’s inauguration
She said: ‘He was mad at me a couple years ago, really obsessed with me a couple years ago, which is f***ing crazy. What?
‘I can’t even understand it. I literally cannot even understand it. It’s such far-out concept that I don’t want to believe that actually is happening. It’s insane.
‘At that point, he was just, like, a reality star. I had no reference. It wasn’t like really a thing. But in retrospect, somebody reminded me of that and I was like, “Oh my gosh, you’re right!”‘

After reading out a few of his tweets involving the cheating scandal, she joked: ‘I don’t think Donald Trump hated me. I think he’s in love with my boyfriend.’
Kristen then ended with the mic-drop line: ‘Donald, if you didn’t like me then, you’re probably really not going to like me now because I’m hosting SNL and I’m, like, so gay, dude.’
