Laurence Fishburne hasn’t seen Will Smith play Neo in the “Matrix”-inspired music video for Smith’s single “Beautiful Scars” with rapper Big Sean. In fact, Fishburne wasn’t even aware the video existed.

“Oh really? I haven’t seen it,” Fishburne told Variety at the premiere of “The Amateur” on Wednesday night in New York City. “What’s it called?”

In the “Beautiful Scars” video, Smith portrays Neo, a role he turned down when the Wachowskis offered him the lead in their 1999 sci-fi action movie “The Matrix.” Keanu Reeves ultimately accepted the career-defining role. In Smith’s video, Big Sean steps into the role of Morpheus, originally played by Fishburne. When asked for his thoughts on the music video concept, Fishburne simply said, “I think that’s cool.”

Fishburne famously portrayed Morpheus in the first three “Matrix” films. However, he did not reprise his role in 2021’s “The Matrix Resurrections” opposite returning actors Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II took on the character instead. During a recent appearance on “The View,” host Sarah Haines asked if Fishburne would consider returning to the “Matrix” franchise.

“It depends on the circumstances — who is involved, how well the script is written, if they offer me,” Fishburne said. “I offered my services for the fourth ‘Matrix,‘ and they didn’t respond well.”

“So, hey, it’s not like I didn’t say, ‘Oh, I’d like to offer my services.’ I did. And for whatever reason, that didn’t happen. OK. But that’s the truth,” he added. “So we’ll see.”

Although Fishburne didn’t return as Morpheus in “The Matrix Resurrections,” he will get to showcase his fighting skills once again in the upcoming espionage thriller “The Amateur,” which also stars Rami Malek, Rachel Brosnahan and Jon Bernthal.

“I have a pretty big fight in the movie, so I was excited about that,” Fishburne told Variety. “We had to learn the fight — a lot of choreography. A lot of stretching and warming up, you know? To make sure we didn’t get hurt.”

“The Amateur” hits theaters April 11.
