NEW YORK – Just a little over two weeks since its debut, Sydney Sweeney’s blockbuster “The Housemaid” is set to expand its story with an upcoming sequel.

Lionsgate revealed on Tuesday that they plan to commence production on “The Housemaid’s Secret” by the end of this year. This follow-up film will be inspired by the second installment of Freida McFadden’s popular book trilogy.

“The Housemaid” has captivated audiences at the box office during the holiday season, raking in over $75 million domestically and $133 million globally within just 17 days. The psychological thriller, directed by Paul Feig, was produced on a budget of $35 million.

According to Lionsgate, they are developing “The Housemaid’s Secret” with the intention of bringing back both Feig and Sweeney, with Sweeney also taking on the role of executive producer. The screenplay for the sequel is being crafted by Rebecca Sonnenshine, who penned the original film.

“The global box office success and enthusiastic response on social media clearly show that audiences are eager for the distinctive and theatrical experience of ‘The Housemaid,’ and are curious to see what unfolds next,” stated Adam Fogelson, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

For Sweeney, “The Housemaid” marks a significant triumph at the box office, especially following the underwhelming performance of her previous film “Christy,” a boxing drama that garnered only $2 million worldwide last November. In “The Housemaid,” Sweeney plays the role of a live-in maid employed by a wealthy couple, portrayed by Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar.
