In a tragic incident on Long Island, a teenager stands accused of fatally shooting his former girlfriend in what appears to be a murder-suicide attempt.

The Suffolk County Police have reported that 18-year-old Emily Finn was shot and killed by her 17-year-old ex-boyfriend at his residence in Nesconset, New York on the morning of November 26, just a day before Thanksgiving.

Authorities stated that after allegedly committing the act, the teenager turned the gun on himself, shooting himself in the face. His parents discovered the scene and immediately called 911.

Emily Finn was declared dead at the scene, while the 17-year-old suspect was rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition, police confirmed.

The authorities have announced that the teen will face charges of second-degree murder. His arraignment is scheduled for a later date, at which time he will be required to enter a plea.

Detective Lieutenant Kevin Beyrer from the Suffolk County Police Department informed local news outlet Greater Long Island that Finn, originally from West Sayville, New York, had gone to her ex-boyfriend’s house to return his belongings following their recent breakup.

According to an online obituary, Finn was a recent graduate of Sayville High School and a freshman at SUNY Oneonta, where she was pursuing a major in Early Childhood/Elementary Education and a minor in Dance.

The teen was remembered by family as an “avid dancer” who “loved ballet from a very young age.” She danced for more than four years at the American Ballet Studio in Bayport, N.Y., before leaving for college, the studio’s artistic director, Kathy Kairns-Scholz, told local outlet Newsday.

“She had everything in front of her,” Kairns-Scholz said. “She would have been the best teacher, mother and whatever she chose to be. Her personality was warm and welcoming. She was everything a parent would want in a child and teacher would want to have in their classroom.”

Finn is survived by her parents, brother, and many other family members and friends, her obituary noted.
