NBC has finally given a sneak peek at its upcoming The Office spinoff series, The Paper – and it looks just as gloriously awkward as the original.

During NBCUniversal’s Upfront presentation on Monday, NBC provided an update on the new Peacock series. The series stars Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, and Oscar Nuñez, who appeared to talk about the show. This mockumentary-style series chronicles the lives of the staff at a struggling Midwestern newspaper.

“We are part of an amazing ensemble cast portraying underdog characters who are uniting to preserve journalism,” Gleeson remarked during the event, according to Entertainment Weekly. “My character earnestly believes he can restore The Truth Teller to its former glory… And for those curious, I will not be using my Irish accent.”

Peacock revealed the show’s expected release timeframe and debuted a first-look image from the pilot episode. The image features Gleeson standing on a desk, addressing the newsroom, with Nuñez, Impacciatore, and their colleagues looking on.

The series is set in the same universe as The Office, but is not necessarily a reboot or revival.

The Paper show’s logline reads: “The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.”

Impacciatore and Gleeson appear to be the series leads, though NBC has largely kept the nature of their roles under wraps. Nuñez, however, is confirmed to be reprising his role from the original series as Oscar Martinez.

Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Ramona Young, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, and Tim Key also round out the cast.

Palisades Post, a local newspaper based in the California town of Pacific Palisades, revealed the actors shadowed members of the newspaper’s staff “gain a deeper understanding of the inner-workings of a local publication” for The Paper series.

The actors reportedly shadowed staff members who worked in sales, reporting, circulation and graphic design.

When will The Paper premiere?

NBC announced the series will stream exclusively on Peacock beginning in September. An official date has not been announced yet.

The Office is currently streaming on Peacock, as well.
