A father is facing charges after reportedly leaving his children unsupervised at a hotel pool, where one child was discovered unconscious and foaming at the mouth, as reported by law enforcement.
Frederick Alfred, a Senate hopeful from Colorado, has been charged with two felony counts of child neglect and is currently detained at the Monroe County Jail in Key West, Florida. It remains uncertain if Alfred has submitted a plea in response to these charges.
On April 20, police were called to a potential drowning incident involving a young girl at a hotel pool, according to an arrest document obtained by Oxygen.
Upon their arrival, first responders found CPR already being administered, but the child’s parents were not present. Shortly afterward, the father, identified as Alfred, appeared at the scene holding an alcoholic beverage.
Alfred allegedly informed officers that he had left his six-year-old son and four-year-old daughter alone at a hot tub for approximately five minutes while he went to the bar.
According to the report, when emergency personnel requested permission to transport the children to a hospital, Alfred initially refused. Despite being cautioned by authorities about the “very significant risk” of potential health issues, he eventually relented and agreed to the hospital visit.
A man who allegedly pulled the girl out of the pool told police he was approached by her sibling for help, according to the arrest report. When he reached the pool, he recalled, no parents were present and the girl was unconscious and foaming at the mouth, per the report, so he administered CPR.
Meanwhile, Alfred’s son had also swallowed pool water while left unattended, according to the arrest report.
In the affidavit, police noted that Alfred strongly smelled like alcohol and cited a receipt showing purchases for beverages called “Bourbon and Bubbles” and “Levitate.”
Oxygen could not immediately locate an attorney for Alfred. A spokesperson from his campaign did not immediately return a request for comment from Oxygen.
Alfred’s next court date is May 5.
