Dolly Parton is one of the most iconic musical artists in the world, though surprisingly she’s never been a part of the judges panel on either American Idol or The Voice.

The 79-year-old country music legend has appeared on both shows as a guest mentor, though she has turned down several offers to be a judge on each show.

As it turns out, there’s quite the emotional reason why the Jolene singer refuses to go on these reality competition shows, which comes after she revealed the warning she gave to Sabrina Carpenter.

She revealed in a new interview with E! News that she’s, ‘been asked to do it a lot of times,’ but she’s turned them down.

Her reason was more kind than you’d expect, revealing she just simply doesn’t want to hurt people.

‘It’s too hard for me. That’s why I don’t accept it, because I know how sincere everybody is,’ the singer said.

She added, ‘Even if they’re not that good, they believe they are. And I just can’t hurt people.”

Parton has appeared as a guest mentor on American Idol during Season 7 in 2008, where eventual winner David Cook and the rest of the Top 9 sang Parton’s songs.

She was also featured as a guest mentor on both Season 9 and Season 11 of The Voice in 2015 and 2016.

The singer has been keeping busy with a new Broadway musical based on her life and career, debuting in 2026.

Her Tennessee theme park Dollywood just celebrated its 40th anniversary as well, as she opened up about the park’s early days, as she wondered if anyone would visit.

‘I thought, well, what if they don’t? What am I going to do? Then, I started seeing cars coming in,’ she said.

Parton added, ‘I remember how exciting that feeling was when the parking lot filled up. Now it’s filling up all the time. And 40 years later, we’ve got them still coming.’

‘I’m just very proud of all of it, because I’ve seen it grow. It’s like having a house full of kids,’ she said.

‘Every time something new goes in, it’s like, “Oh, we got a new baby, we got a new kid in the family,”‘ she added.

She added, 'Even if they're not that good, they believe they are. And I just can't hurt people."

‘But it’s an amazing park and it’s catered to families. And so we’re proud of that. I think I’m as proud of that as anything, that people want to come back,’ Parton said.

She also recently opened up about losing her husband Carl Dean after 60 years together back in March.

‘Oh, you know what, I get very emotional when people bring it up,’ Parton told Today’s Savannah Guthrie.

‘But we were together 60 years. I’ve loved him since I was 18 years old,’ she said, as she fought back tears.
