In a tragic turn of events, the charges against a man implicated in the disappearance of Kada Scott have been elevated to murder following the Philadelphia medical examiner’s determination that her death was a homicide.
The Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed that Scott, aged 23, succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head, as reported by NBC10 Philadelphia.
On Wednesday, October 21, the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office revealed that Keon King, 21, is now facing further charges, including robbery, theft, corpse abuse, and conspiracy, all tied to this high-profile case.
The grim discovery of Scott’s body occurred on October 18. Two weeks had passed since her disappearance, and she was found in a shallow grave near an abandoned middle school.
When Did Kada Scott Disappear?
Scott was on duty for an overnight shift at the Terrace at Chestnut Hill assisted living facility on October 4. A coworker noted seeing her outside in the parking lot, engaged in an intense phone conversation.
Reportedly, Scott was overheard expressing frustration, saying, “I can’t believe you’re calling me about this s–t,” before heading towards a dark-colored vehicle that soon departed the scene, according to a criminal complaint acquired by the news outlet.
Cell phone records show that Scott made a total of 12 phone calls between 9:25 p.m. and 10:12 p.m. and had been texting with a number believed to belong to King.
Earlier that day, according to court records, Scott allegedly texted King “kidnap me again,” to which he replied, “better be up too.” Their final exchange came at 10:09 p.m., when she texted, “cm when u here.”
When she didn’t return home the next morning, her mother called the assisted living facility and Scott was reported missing.
Cell Phone Records, Surveillance Footage Reveal Kada Scott’s Final Movements
Authorities later discovered phone records that showed King and Scott’s phones traveling together toward the Ada H. H. Lewis Middle School the night of her disappearance. Surveillance video also captured a car pulling into a nearby recreation center parking spot.
Scott’s phone stopped submitting a signal at 10:24 p.m. according to the court documents, obtained by CBS News.
The next night, at 11:39 p.m., surveillance cameras picked up two people in the parking lot getting out of a Toyota Camry allegedly belonging to King and walking toward the abandoned middle school. At 3:56 a.m., they returned to the lot, according to the criminal complaint.
Footage showed them taking a heavy object, consistent with a body, out of the passenger side of the Camry and carrying it toward the woods, authorities said. They were spotted returning to the vehicle for a second time around 4:25 a.m. before walking out of view once again, according to the court records.
A spokesperson for Philadelphia Police told Oxygen that King turned himself into authorities on Oct. 14 and was charged with kidnapping and related offenses.
Kada Scott’s Remains Are Found
The next day, police searched the abandoned middle school and found several items believed to belong to Scott including a cell phone case, an iPad case, glasses, and a card with her name.
Later that same day, investigators located a gold Toyota Camry police said was “connected to Kada’s disappearance” and took it into custody for forensic examination.
Her remains were discovered buried in a wooded area near the school on Oct. 18 after police received a “very specific” tip the night before, NBC10 reported.
King is being represented by attorney Shaka M.Johnson, whose office had no comment on the allegations.
King is currently being held on $500,000 bond, but is expected to appear for a new arraignment in light of the murder charges against him, CBS News reported.
