A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded at a toddler’s birthday celebration in California, where a mass shooting claimed the lives of four individuals, three of whom were children. This horrific event shattered the joyous occasion as the family gathered to cut the birthday cake.

The gathering, held in Stockton on November 29, was meant to celebrate Patrice Williams’ two-year-old daughter. Fortunately, the young girl emerged unscathed from the attack on the banquet hall, a venue filled with at least 100 attendees. San Joaquin County Sheriff Patrick Withrow had earlier informed the press about the chilling incident.

“I just wanted all my family to come together,” Williams shared with the Associated Press on December 1. She recounted the moment when the guests began to gather for the cake-cutting, only to be met with the terrifying sound of gunfire. “Everybody just dove to the ground,” she said, recounting the chaos that erupted.

Among those caught in the crossfire were Williams’ sister, a cousin, and three friends. In total, 11 people sustained injuries, while the deceased included a 21-year-old and three children aged 8, 9, and 14.

“I actually thought it was my balloons popping,” Williams reflected, still grappling with the surreal nature of the attack. She noted that she didn’t see the shooter amid the commotion.

On Monday, Williams expressed deep sorrow for the grieving parents who lost their children in this senseless act of violence, highlighting the profound impact on the community and the families involved.

“I’m just so shocked and lost and I’m speechless,” she said. “I’m sorry to all the mothers out there that lost their kids at my birthday party.”

On Nov. 30, authorities put the ask out for anyone to share eye-witness accounts, cellphone video and tips for a suspect.

“This is a time for our community to show that we will not put up with this type of behavior, when people will just walk in and kill children,” Withrow said during Sunday’s media briefing. “And so if you know anything about this, you have to come forward and tell us what you know. If not, you just become complacent and think this is acceptable behavior.”

“They should be writing their Christmas lists right now. Their parents should be out shopping for them for Christmas,” Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi said of the victims at Sunday’s event. “And to think that their lives are over. I can’t even begin to imagine what these families are going through. Breaks my heart.”
